Transport options to and from Minneapolis
Bus
Journey time: 30–45 minutes including light rail transfer, depending on route and traffic
Fare: $2.00–$2.50 one-way using standard Metro Transit fare (valid on buses and light rail for two hours).
Metro Transit bus routes connect MSP to various parts of the Twin Cities. Route 54 and Route 122 previously served airport but service patterns have changed — current primary access for most passengers is via METRO Blue Line. Local buses connect at Mall of America Transit Station and downtown transfer points after light rail segments. MSP also offers hotel shuttles and private shared-ride services.
rail
Journey time: Approximately 20–25 minutes from Terminal 1 to Downtown Minneapolis (Government Plaza/Nicollet Mall)
Fare: $2.00 off-peak or $2.50 rush hour (good for two hours of travel and transfers). Downtown Zone rides within central Minneapolis cost $0.50 (not applicable from airport). No ticket needed between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 stations.
METRO Blue Line light rail serves both MSP terminals and connects directly to downtown Minneapolis. Airport stations: Terminal 1-Lindbergh Station and Terminal 2-Humphrey Station. Trains run 24 hours a day between the two airport stations (no fare required for inter-terminal travel). For travel to downtown, trains operate roughly every 10 minutes at peak times and 10–15 minutes off-peak. Key downtown station: Government Plaza (City Hall) and Nicollet Mall. The Blue Line continues north to Target Field and south to Mall of America and Bloomington.
taxi_rideshare
Journey time: 20–30 minutes to downtown Minneapolis or Saint Paul, depending on traffic and weather
Fare: Taxi: approximately $35–$45 to downtown Minneapolis; $40–$50 to downtown Saint Paul (metered, plus airport access fee). Uber/Lyft: roughly $25–$40 to downtown Minneapolis off-peak; more during surge.
Licensed taxis and rideshares serve both terminals. At Terminal 1, taxis and rideshare pickups are located on Level T (ground transport center) accessed via elevators from baggage claim. At Terminal 2, pickup is at the ground transport area outside baggage claim. Uber, Lyft, and local taxi companies (Airport Taxi, Green & White, iHail, etc.) operate 24/7.

MSP has two Priority Pass lounges — Escape Lounge and PGA MSP Lounge — both in Terminal 1 above Concourse E, so which one you pick depends on whether you want a traditional lounge (Escape) or to mix golf simulators and putting greens (PGA). If you are flying Delta from the far end of Concourse G or smaller regional gates, budget extra walking time: MSP's concourses are long and the central mall is at the D/E core. The METRO Blue Line is generally the quickest and cheapest way to downtown Minneapolis; buy tickets from machines at the airport station or use the Metro Transit app, and remember that inter-terminal trips require no ticket at all.
MSP consistently ranks among the top North American mega airports for passenger satisfaction and has a streamlined security layout. Terminal 1 has multiple security checkpoints feeding into different concourses — you can generally use any checkpoint and walk airside to your gate, but Delta hub banks can create long lines during morning (06:00–09:00) and late afternoon (15:00–18:00) peaks. TSA PreCheck and CLEAR are available at primary Terminal 1 checkpoints. When connecting between terminals, use the METRO Blue Line rather than leaving the airport campus — inter-terminal travel is free, 24/7, and often faster than shuttle buses. In winter, allow extra time for de-icing operations when flying Delta from Concourses A–G.
All international arrivals requiring US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) processing are handled at Terminal 1. Global Entry kiosks are available and strongly recommended for frequent international travelers given peak summer transatlantic banks. Mobile Passport Control is accepted as a free alternative for eligible US citizens and permanent residents. MSP's international passenger volume is now over 3.6 million annually and 10% of total traffic; flights from Canada may use preclearance depending on departure airport — check with your airline. Allow at least 75–90 minutes for an international-to-domestic connection to account for CBP, baggage reclaim, re-check, and re-clearing security.
