A bloc of five Indigo Partners-backed carriers has committed to equipping more than 1,000 aircraft with SpaceX Starlink inflight internet, while Copa Airlines is set to become the first airline to charge most passengers for Starlink access — breaking the free-at-launch model adopted by earlier adopters. Separately, Qatar Airways has completed Starlink installation across its A350, 777, and 787-8 fleets, with 787-9s identified as the next fleet type in the rollout queue.[2][6][7]
Airline Updates
Qatar Airways: Qatar Airways has completed Starlink installation on all Airbus A350s, Boeing 777s, and Boeing 787-8s as of July 2026. The Boeing 787-9 fleet is identified as the next and presumably final fleet type in the rollout queue.[2]
Frontier Airlines & Indigo Partners Carriers: Frontier Airlines has signed with SpaceX for Starlink inflight internet service, marking it as the first ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) in the United States to do so.[5] The agreement is part of a broader commitment covering more than 1,000 aircraft across five Indigo Partners-backed carriers: Frontier Airlines, Wizz Air, Volaris, JetSmart, and Cebu Pacific.[6] Frontier's Starlink installation is planned to begin in early 2027, with the carrier bypassing older inflight Wi-Fi systems entirely.[3] Starlink service on Frontier is not expected to be offered free of charge.[3]
Copa Airlines: Copa Airlines is launching Starlink Wi-Fi, transitioning from no inflight connectivity directly to Starlink. Copa is the first airline in Latin America to offer Starlink onboard and is set to become the first airline to charge most passengers for access, departing from the free Starlink models used by other carriers. Premium cabin passengers, elite frequent flyers, and existing Starlink residential or roaming subscribers are expected to receive complimentary access.[7][8][9][10]
American Airlines: American Airlines has Starlink Wi-Fi plans referenced as part of a broader 18-month improvement effort, with free Wi-Fi cited alongside Starlink as part of the carrier's ongoing changes.[12]
Inaugural Flights: Two airlines completed inaugural Starlink flights in recent weeks, with a third airline reported to have hardware installation and testing underway, with an inaugural expected imminently.[11]
Data Spotlight
Qatar Airways route-level Starlink coverage data registered notable shifts on several European corridors as of this briefing period. Starlink-equipped flight coverage on QR FCO↔DOH, QR BER↔DOH, QR DOH↔MXP, and QR CPH↔DOH routes surged from 5% to 97% (StarlinkFlights data), consistent with Qatar Airways' reported completion of Starlink installation across its A350 and 777 fleets serving European destinations.[2] In contrast, the QR JNB↔DOH corridor recorded a decline from 97% to 5% Starlink-equipped coverage (StarlinkFlights data), a movement that may reflect aircraft rotation or scheduling changes on that route.

Industry Watch
The U.S. Air Force's KC-135R Stratotanker fleet is receiving Starshield antenna installations, SpaceX's government and military-grade variant of Starlink featuring encryption-hardened capabilities. A KC-135R at RAF Mildenhall was observed on June 7, 2026, fitted with a new trapezoid-shaped dorsal antenna identified by The War Zone as broadly reflective of Starlink-style high-bandwidth satellite communications terminals.[1] The development signals expanding adoption of Starlink-derived technology beyond commercial aviation into military airlift and refueling platforms.[1]
On the commercial pricing front, Copa Airlines' decision to charge most passengers for Starlink access marks a potential structural shift in how airlines monetize inflight connectivity. Prior airline Starlink launches have predominantly offered complimentary access, at least at rollout.[10] Whether Copa's paid-tier model influences future airline Starlink pricing strategies remains an open question across the industry.[8]
Travel Tip of the Day
If you are flying Copa Airlines and want complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi access, check whether you hold premium cabin status, elite frequent flyer membership, or an existing Starlink residential or roaming subscription — those groups are expected to receive free access under Copa's rollout model.[10] For Frontier Airlines passengers, note that Starlink service is planned to begin in 2027 and is not expected to be offered at no charge, consistent with Frontier's ultra-low-cost carrier model.[3][5]
