Why You Can Get 300 Mbps on One Flight and Nothing on the Next
You book the same seat on the same route you flew last month. Last time you had 200 Mbps and got through half a day of work. This time there's no WiFi at all. Same airline. Same ticket price. Same aircraft type listed on the booking.
This is tail rotation, and it catches frequent flyers out more than almost anything else about inflight connectivity.
Every Aircraft Gets Its Own Number
Airlines don't operate routes with a fixed plane. They operate routes with a schedule, and the aircraft assigned to that schedule changes daily based on maintenance windows, crew positioning, and fleet utilisation. A Boeing 737-800 registered N12345 might fly LAX-JFK on Monday and sit in a maintenance bay on Tuesday while a different 737-800, N67890, covers the same route.
If N12345 has Starlink installed and N67890 does not, passengers on Tuesday get no WiFi. The route is identical. The experience is not.
This is why checking whether an airline has Starlink on a given route tells you the probability of getting connectivity, not a guarantee. On a carrier mid-rollout, any given flight might have a 40% or 60% chance of an equipped aircraft. The exact figure depends on how far through the fleet the installation programme has reached, and which aircraft the scheduler assigns that day.
Fleet Rollout Is Not Linear
Airlines don't install Starlink on all aircraft simultaneously. They work through the fleet in batches, typically prioritising specific aircraft types or age cohorts first. United Airlines started with certain 737-800s and 737 MAX variants before expanding to widebodies. Alaska Airlines equipped its E175 regional fleet before touching the 737-800 mainline. airBaltic took the opposite approach, committing to its entire A220 fleet from the outset and completing installation across all aircraft.
At any point during a rollout, a carrier's fleet is split: some aircraft fully equipped, some awaiting installation, some that may not be scheduled for Starlink at all.
The ratio of equipped to unequipped aircraft on a specific route depends on which aircraft types regularly operate it. A long-haul route flown exclusively by 777s gets connectivity faster if the 777 fleet is prioritised. A domestic route flown by a mixed pool of 737-800s and 737 MAXes gets a patchwork result until the whole type is done.
The Gap Between Announcement and Experience
Airlines announce Starlink partnerships when the contract is signed, not when the first passenger gets online. The announcement from American Airlines in May 2026 confirmed Starlink for 500-plus Airbus narrowbody aircraft, but the first installations do not begin until Q1 2027. A passenger booking an American flight today and expecting Starlink connectivity will be disappointed for the next eight months.
Qatar Airways had equipped the majority of its 787 and A350 fleet by early 2026, making it one of the most reliable carriers for Starlink connectivity on long-haul routes. At the other end of the scale, carriers that have announced Starlink partnerships but not yet begun installations offer zero probability of connectivity regardless of what the booking confirmation says.
The gap between announcement and meaningful fleet coverage is typically 12 to 24 months. Some carriers close it faster. Most do not.
How to Check Before You Fly
The tail number assigned to your specific flight usually appears in flight tracking data 24 to 48 hours before departure. Once you have the tail number, you can check whether that specific aircraft has Starlink installed.

For flights further out, the route-level probability score reflects the historical ratio of equipped aircraft on that specific route. It is a useful indicator, but not a confirmation. The confirmation only comes once the tail is known.
