Use Airport Express In-Town Check-In to reclaim your morning
If flying Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines, Qantas, or Singapore Airlines, check your bags at Hong Kong Station or Kowloon Station up to 24 hours before departure. This eliminates the check-in queue at the airport entirely. HK$120 Octopus fare to Hong Kong Station takes just 24 minutes and the train runs from 05:50 to 00:48. Not available for HK Express.
Enrol for e-Channel if you're a frequent transiter
As of 27 February 2026, the e-Channel eligibility for visitors was significantly relaxed — you now only need two visits to HKG in the past 24 months to qualify. Enrolment is free, quick, and fingerprint-free for electronic passport holders. This dramatically speeds up both arrivals and departures clearance.
Know the Cathay lounge landscape before you arrive (it changed in April 2026)
The Wing, First reopened 22 April 2026 but with temporarily restricted access (CX First Class + Diamond members only). The Wing, Business is CLOSED until mid-2027. oneworld Emerald members should head to The Pier, First (near Gate 65, east concourse). Business class / Sapphire members use The Pier Business (Gate 65), The Deck (Gate 6), or The Bridge (Gate 35 junction). Know which concourse your gate is on to pick the most convenient lounge.
Terminal 2 is brand new — check which terminal your airline uses from June 2026
T2 departure facilities opened 27 May 2026. Hong Kong Airlines already moved; HK Express moves to T2 on 10 June 2026. 14 other carriers are migrating in a phased schedule. Always verify your terminal for check-in before arriving at HKG, as the signage and flow are different from T1.
The SkyPier ferry gives a seamless PRD connection without clearing HK immigration
For connections to Macau or Shenzhen (Shekou in ~30 min), the SkyPier allows transfer directly between your flight and the ferry in many cases without clearing Hong Kong immigration. This is ideal for business travellers who need a quick side trip to Shenzhen or Macau without wasting time on a full HK entry/exit process. Book ferry tickets in advance and check eligibility for the landside-to-airside transfer protocol.
E Channel
Hong Kong permanent residents (HKSAR passport / HK ID card holders) aged 11+ may use e-Channel. Upgraded facial recognition e-Channel service for eligible residents aged 11+ announced May 2026.. Not required for HKSAR permanent residents — automatic eligibility. As of 27 February 2026: Frequent visitors who have visited Hong Kong via HKG at least TWICE in the past 24 months (previously required more visits), hold a valid travel document and (if required) a valid multiple-visit visa, aged 18+, no adverse immigration record.. Free enrolment at designated offices. Electronic travel document holders: present passport, photo taken, sign consent form. Fingerprints NO LONGER required for electronic travel document holders.. Transit Without Visa
Many nationalities can transit HKG airside without a visa for up to 24 hours provided they remain within the airport transit area, hold a confirmed onward ticket, and do not pass through immigration into Hong Kong.. From 15 November 2025: Nepalese nationals may now transit HKG airside visa-free (direct airside transit only, must remain within transit area, maximum stay not specified as 24h per Immigration Dept announcement).. Airside transit rules are separate from Hong Kong entry visa requirements. Recommended Arrival Times
3 hours before departure (general recommendation). 3.5 hours during peak periods (July, August, December; weekday peak 05:00–08:00 and 16:00–19:00). Using Airport Express in-town check-in allows earlier bag drop; passengers still advised to be at airport 90 minutes before departure minimum. Most airline counters close 60–90 minutes before departure (airline-specific; e.g., Thai Airways closes 60 min before as of May 2025)
