Transport options to and from Detroit
Bus
Journey time: approximately 70–90 minutes to downtown Detroit
Fare: $2.00 (cash or SMART MyCard)
SMART (Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation) Route 125 — budget option. Stops at both McNamara Terminal (Gate 1, Ground Transportation Center) and Evans Terminal (North Terminal). Connects to downtown Detroit and the Rosa Parks Transit Center, with additional Route 280 serving Evans Terminal to other Wayne County points. Frequency every 30–60 minutes. Service hours approximately 5:30am–11:30pm. No fixed fare box — purchase SMART MyCard or pay exact cash fare. Very slow — multiple stops; buses must navigate suburban roads.
taxi_rideshare
Journey time: approximately 25–35 minutes to downtown Detroit in normal traffic; 35–55 minutes during morning rush (6am–9am) or afternoon rush on I-94/I-75/M-39
Fare: UberX/Lyft: approximately $31–55 to downtown Detroit. Taxi: approximately $45–60 metered (some drivers quote $47 flat). DAX shared shuttle: approximately $6–8 advance booking / $8 at door to downtown Detroit.
Taxis and rideshare (Uber, Lyft) available from Ground Transportation Centers at both McNamara Terminal (lower/arrivals level, Door 1) and Evans Terminal (lower level). Designated TNC rideshare pickup zones marked with signage at arrivals exit. Taxis metered; some offer flat rates to downtown. DAX (Detroit Area Express) also operates airport-to-downtown shuttles (shared-ride) departing on schedule. Rideshare is the most popular option for getting to downtown Detroit, Dearborn, Ann Arbor, or Detroit suburbs.
journey_time_city_center
25–35 min by rideshare/taxi; 70–90 min by SMART bus. Airport is in Romulus, MI — 19 miles (30 km) southwest of downtown Detroit.
The Gate A38 Delta Sky Club is the best lounge at DTW: it is the only Sky Club with showers, it opens earliest (4:15am) and closes latest (10:30pm), and its central location in the A38 link connector means it is a 3–5 minute walk from any point in Concourse A via the ExpressTram. For Priority Pass holders, the pickings are limited but clever: use Be Relax Spa (next to Sky Club at Gate A43) for a complimentary massage, and Gameway (Gates A17 or A63–A65) for 2 hours of gaming — both accessible on the Priority Pass app without paying. The Westin Hotel inside McNamara Terminal has a private security entrance accessible from the hotel lobby that bypasses the main security queues — even if you are not a Westin guest, the hotel's Reflections restaurant is pre-security and accessible without going through security at all, making it a useful option for meeting non-travelling companions or for a relaxed pre-check-in meal.
DTW has separate security checkpoints for McNamara Terminal and Evans Terminal — there is no airside connection between the two. The McNamara Terminal has three security checkpoints: one at the south end (serving Gates A1–A28), one in the centre (serving the link to B and C concourses), and one at the north end (serving Gates A56–A78). TSA PreCheck is available at all McNamara checkpoints and at Evans Terminal. CLEAR biometric screening is available at McNamara Terminal. For Delta passengers: the Gate A38 Delta Sky Club is the most strategically located as it sits at the centre of Concourse A and is accessible from all three McNamara security checkpoints. The ExpressTram within McNamara runs frequently (every 3–4 min, free) and is the fastest way to cover the 1-mile length of Concourse A — particularly useful for passengers connecting from Gates A1–A10 to international departures at the far north end (Gates A60–A78) or vice versa. For Evans Terminal (Lufthansa, Allegiant, Breeze): the check-in and security are entirely separate — if you are connecting between terminals post-security, you CANNOT do so airside; you must exit landside and take the free inter-terminal shuttle (every 10 minutes).
International arrivals at DTW are processed at the Federal Inspection Services (CBP) facility in McNamara Terminal, accessible from Concourse A's international arrival gates (Gates A1–A30, south end). Global Entry kiosks available in the FIS facility — enrol in advance at cbp.gov to avoid potentially long CBP queues. The CBP One app (Mobile Passport Control) is also accepted for eligible passport holders. Canadian preclearance is NOT available at DTW — all Canadian arrivals clear CBP on arrival in McNamara Terminal. Detroit is a popular Canada-US crossing point due to proximity to Windsor, Ontario — expect high Canadian passenger volume and potentially longer FIS queues during summer, Thanksgiving, and Christmas periods. Connecting passengers (international arrival then domestic Delta onward) should allow minimum 60 minutes: FIS processing, baggage reclaim, recheck, and re-clearing domestic security all take time. The post-CBP baggage reclaim is at the south end of McNamara Terminal near the international arrivals exit.
