Book the free security time slot
Schiphol and KLM offer a free time slot reservation system for security, bookable up to 3 days before your flight at klm.com or the Schiphol app. Select a 15-minute window, receive a QR code, and use the express-entry lane. Can reduce security to under 1 minute. Critical in 2026 given the ongoing contractor reshuffle causing major delays.
Albert Heijn pre-security = the best food value
There is an Albert Heijn supermarket between Arrivals 2 and 3 (pre-security) selling fresh sandwiches, pastries, salads, and snacks at true supermarket prices - far cheaper than airside outlets. Stock up before going through security. Solid food passes through fine; liquids over 100ml cannot be taken airside.
Priority Pass does NOT work at KLM Crown Lounges
The KLM Crown Lounges (both Schengen Lounge 25 and non-Schengen Lounge 52) explicitly do not accept Priority Pass or DragonPass. If you hold Priority Pass, use Aspire Lounge 26 (Schengen) or Aspire Lounge 41 (non-Schengen) instead. Also note: Aspire Lounges are NOT accessible if you depart from Gate M.
Gate M is a different world - plan accordingly
Budget carrier gates (Ryanair, Wizz Air, etc.) depart from Gate M, a physically separate boarding area with noticeably fewer amenities than the main terminal. No access to either Aspire Lounge. Travellers frequently note the stark contrast. If on a Gate M flight, eat and access services before reaching Gate M.
Non-EU passport holders: budget extra time for EES biometrics
Since 10 April 2026, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully operational at Schiphol. Non-EU nationals (UK, US, Australian, Canadian, etc.) must enrol biometrics (fingerprints + face scan) at a self-service kiosk on their first entry to the Schengen area before using an eGate. First-time enrolment adds time. Subsequent trips are faster. Build in at least 30 extra minutes at passport control if this is your first EES experience.
Schengen Zone Context
The Netherlands is a Schengen Area member. Passengers on intra-Schengen flights (within most EU + Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein) pass through domestic-style security only, no passport control. Separate airside areas exist for Schengen and non-Schengen passengers with different lounges, some different food options, and different border procedures.

Congestion Status May 2026
ONGOING DISRUPTION. Schiphol began a major security contractor overhaul on 18 May 2026, reducing from 5 to 3 contractors (I-SEC, Securitas, Trigion). Security wait times reached 1-3 hours on initial days; hundreds of passengers reported missing flights on 18-20 May 2026. By evening 18 May, waits dropped to 30-35 minutes but still above normal. Schiphol has warned passengers to expect continued disruption during transition.. Book free security time slot in advance. Arrive at Schiphol-recommended times.
